How To Prevent Glass Self-Explosion In Home Doors And Windows?

Aug.15.2024

Glass, as a common material in life, plays an important role in our daily lives. Sometimes, however, glass can self-explode, making people uneasy. So why is this happening?First of all, we need to know that tempered glass is made of raw materials such as sand, alkali and lime that are melted, shaped and cooled at high temperatures. When tempered glass breaks automatically without any direct external impact, we will consider it as self-explosion of the glass.

Causes of self-explosion of glass

As a kind of safety glass, tempered glass is widely used in construction and other fields. According to my country's current glass industry standards, curtain wall tempered glass has a self-explosion rate of 3%.Self-explosion can occur during the processing, storage, transportation, installation, and use of tempered glass. That is to say, even if it is produced completely according to standards, the self-explosion of tempered glass cannot be completely avoided.

Self-explosion can be divided into the following types according to different causes:

  • Visible defects in glass: Such as stones, sand, bubbles, inclusions, chips, scratches, burst edges, etc. For this type of self-explosion, detection is relatively easy, so it can be controlled during production.
  • Nickel sulfide (NIS) impurities and heterogeneous phase particles in glass: These types of particles continue to exist because they cannot be inspected, becoming the main factor causing the self-explosion of tempered glass in use. The root cause of the self-explosion of tempered glass depends on the original piece, because the original piece itself contains impurities - the more nickel sulfide, impurities, and bubbles, the higher the self-explosion rate.
  • Uneven heating inside and outside: Exposure to high temperatures outside and cool breeze blowing indoors with the air conditioner on. Uneven heating inside and outside can lead to self-explosion. This is why self-explosion often occurs in the summer.
  • Other factors: Unreasonable glass slotting and drilling, poor quality of the original glass sheet, small installation gap, uneven thickness such as patterned glass, uneven stress distribution, etc.

How to prevent glass self-explosion ?

The self-explosion of tempered glass cannot be predicted, but preventive measures can be taken in advance in practical applications to reduce the occurrence of self-explosion of glass and avoid casualties and economic losses.

  • Choose high-quality original glass:To reduce the self-explosion of glass, it is mainly controlled from the aspects of materials and construction techniques. In high-quality flat glass, the content of stones, bubbles, impurities and nickel sulfide is low, the construction technology is guaranteed, it contains less nickel sulfide, and the quality of the glass itself is good, so the chance of self-explosion is small. Using high-quality flat glass from major brand manufacturers as the original piece of tempered glass can significantly reduce the self-explosion of tempered glass. Therefore, it is not recommended to buy glass that is too cheap.
  • Look for 3C certification:3C certification is Chinas compulsory product certification. It is the most basic safety certification. You must choose products with national 3C certification. The 3C mark is usually affixed to the surface of the product, or pressed on the product through molding. If you look carefully, you will find multiple oval "CCC" marks.
  • Paste polyester film (explosion-proof film):Polyester film is commonly known as safety explosion-proof film. A high-performance polyester film is attached to the glass. When the glass breaks due to various reasons, it can stick to the glass fragments to prevent them from flying and protect people inside and outside the building from the harm of flying glass fragments. Wind, rain and other foreign objects are also difficult to cause damage to the interior.
  • Avoid impact with sharp objectsIn life, try to avoid hitting the tempered glass with sharp objects. Even if there are no cracks at the time, it will increase the speed of the glass's self-explosion.
  • Select glass with special craftsmanshipLaminated tempered glass is not easy to break and has excellent earthquake resistance and explosion-proof performance, while insulating glass has better thermal insulation.Heat-absorbing coated glass can effectively reduce solar radiation by 20%-30%, thereby reducing the heat energy entering the room and also reducing the load of the air conditioner to a certain extent.

Glass self-explosion is a rare physical phenomenon. As long as we understand its causes and prevention methods, we can effectively avoid or reduce the occurrence of glass self-explosion incidents and make our lives safer and more comfortable.
